PROMISE FOR SUCCESS PUBLIC MEETINGS Alma d’arte Gadsden High School 402 W. Court Avenue 6301 Highway 28 Drive Las Cruces, NM 88005 Anthony, NM 88021 The Promise for Success Initiative will hold two public meetings in Doña Ana County on Wednesday, December 3. Community members will learn about new proposals to support youth and families and have a unique opportunity to provide feedback to shape the planning and implementation of the new proposals. The Promise for Success Initiative is a planning effort—the first of its kind in the county—to create a comprehensive, community-based strategic approach to reduce the incidence and severity of delinquency, abuse and neglect, truancy, substance abuse, gangs, runaways, and school failure. The initiative will also facilitate an increase in the level of parental responsibility in Doña Ana County. The Promise for Success Initiative was initiated by the Gadsden Independent School District (GISD) and the Children’s Court Division of the Third Judicial District. The Vera Institute of Justice provided research and technical assistance for the initiative. “The Promise for Success Initiative demonstrates Doña Ana County’s commitment to a brighter future for our children,” notes the Honorable Fernando Macias of the Third Judicial District Court. “It is my hope that the greatest impact of this process will be to improve opportunities for the young people in our community.” In September, members of Doña Ana’s school districts, judicial system, state agencies, local government, service providers, faith community, and others participated in a two-day planning session to review local quantitative and qualitative data, learn about national best practices, and develop a strategic plan to improve outcomes for children and their families in Doña Ana. This plan will be released at the end of December. The public meetings will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gadsden High School in Anthony and Alma d’arte Charter School in Las Cruces. All members of the Doña Ana community are encouraged to attend, especially parents, children, and teenagers. Representatives from La Clinica and Ben Archer Clinic will be on site offering free health services including blood pressure and sugar testing. Transportation will be provided to the meeting in Anthony. For more information, contact Shirley Judson at (575)993-9373 or shrl.judson@gmail.com.
